Not only does Tempe host the headquarters of US Airways and Insight Enterprises - both Fortune 500 corporations - it also is home to Arizona State’s main campus. What makes Tempe unique is its historical and contemporary landmarks, which are sure to please the eyes of travelers and residents alike.

Tempe was initially land inhabited by the Hohokam Indians, with settlement by Americans occurring in the middle nineteenth century. Settlements and a fort - Fort McDowell - were constructed during this time. Tempe’s name was officially recognized in 1879 at the suggestion of Darrell Duppa. Tempe and the surrounding area hosts several historical societies and museums honoring the heritage and tradition of Arizona and the Southwest, such as the ASU Art Museum, the Arizona Historical Society Museum and the Arizona Historical Foundation.

Historical landmarks mix with contemporary art in the Art in Neighborhoods program. Tempe has sanctioned numerous public art projects, with parks, fire stations and City Hall being decorated by poets and artists. The city offers a map of the locations of these works for visitors and residents to take a self tour. This project has created opportunities for artists to apply for positions to practice their skills on public property, beautifying what is bland in other cities.

The Tempe Marketplace offers a truly unique experience with its 1.3 million square feet of retail space. Laser light shows, fireplaces and restaurants are combined into an exciting atmosphere. Nightclubs can be found in the Mill Avenue District.
